Melaine Shannon Rothey
A senior attorney with 31 years of experience, Ms. Rothey heads the firm’s domestic relations department and practices in all areas of domestic law. Since 1987, she has served as a law clerk in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, where she is currently assigned to the Honorable Lawrence O’Toole, Administrative Judge in the Orphans’ Court Division. Ms. Rothey is currently President-Elect of the Allegheny County Bar Association, and will succeed as President in July 2016. She is also a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a premier organization in the United States that requires two examinations for entry. As an expert in domestic relations, she is frequently asked to speak on family law issues. She has regularly served on seminar panels for the Allegheny County Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Bar Institute in the areas of custody, support, and equitable distribution. Ms. Rothey also teaches at least three or four domestic relations Continuing Legal Education courses each year.
Ms. Rothey was named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer from 2005 through 2010. As a frequent pro bono attorney assisting in Protection from Abuse actions, Ms. Rothey received the 2006 Pennsylvania Bar Association Legal Services to the Public Pro Bono Award and the 2006 Allegheny Bar Association Individual Pro Bono Award. She is a Patron Fellow and a former Trustee of the Allegheny County Bar Association and is on the Board of Directors of the Neighborhood Legal Services Association.
Prior to joining the firm in 2007, Ms. Rothey was a shareholder in a boutique law firm specializing in family law. She began her career with the Allegheny County Public Defender’s Office, where she represented clients before the Pennsylvania appellate courts.
Ms. Rothey received her Juris Doctor degree from Duquesne University School of Law in 1984, and her B.A. from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1979. She is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
